Whig's Defeat Quilt
Approx. size 190cm x 207cm
Circa 1860
This quilt pattern was named after the Whig Party's defeat at the political convention of 1852 in which the party strongly supported the "Missouri Compromise", and was defeated by the convention's endorsement of the "Kansas-Nebraska Compromise". This signed the "Death Warrant" for the party in the US. This pattern is commemorating that event in US history.
This beautiful quilt is appliqued and pieced of fabrics of that time period. The unique saw tooth border mirrors the saw tooth piecing on each block. It came from a private collection in Missouri and it is thought to have been made in Pennsylvania sometime prior to the civil war.
